NooTrees and Bum Boosa Bamboo Products

NooTrees and Bum Boosa Bamboo Products

by Michaela Humby

“No trees were harmed during the making of these products.”

Who is Behind the Launch?

The tagline coined by David Ward, environmental advocate, Founder and General Manager of NooTrees, passionately welcomes an exciting new bamboo tissue products company that is wholly owned by the renowned Singapore based F.J. Benjamin Group, who for more than fifty years have led the field in South East Asia in bringing new ideas and brands to consumers based in the region. Mr. Ward says that the principle behind NooTrees is a desire to see bamboo for paper and pulp products offered at the same common market level that consumers are used to paying. He also recognizes that consumers are seeking alternatives to wood pulp based products and plastic based wet wipes, diapers and sanitary pads in growing numbers.

NooTrees in the Present

Currently producing a super soft 3-ply bamboo toilet paper, 2-ply bamboo facial tissue and several variations of bamboo wet wipes aimed at both family use and skin care, they are also private licensing the U.S. based bamboo brand, Bum Boosa Bamboo ProductsBum Boosa Bamboo Baby Wipes, the first bamboo wipes to be sold in the United States with a market presence since 2009, are now being distributed alongside the NooTrees product line with plans for the brand’s expansion. Distribution to major retailers first began in late 2014 in Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong (and soon to be in the Philippines); NooTrees just launched in North America in the first quarter of this year. In the U.S. the NooTrees line has been taken on by KeHe Distributors LLC, the largest specialty distributor in the U.S. with 9 distribution centers in the United States and 3 in Canada, servicing 40,000 grocery stores and natural markets. NooTrees has also entered into distribution agreements with California-based Monterrey Provisions, FoodMX in Mexico, and has landed several agreements with major online retailers, such as Lucky Vitamin, Drugstore.com and Diapers.com.

NooTrees is a company that believes bamboo is the answer to offsetting both consumption of trees and reducing our carbon footprint at the same time. Director of Sales for the North American Region, Jonathan Antflick says, “I am truly thrilled and humbled at the opportunity of being at the forefront of the NooTrees launch in the U.S. and continuing Bum Boosa’s ever growing name in the bamboo paper products industry. NooTrees and Bum Boosa will continue to foster the development and growth of the bamboo industry, while offering everyday lifestyle consumer products that truly benefit the planet.”

Exciting Plans Ahead

Later this year NooTrees has plans to launch disposable diapers, sanitary pads and kitchen rolls all made from 100% bamboo inputs. Their diapers and sanitary pads will be the world’s first 100% bamboo core versions of these products, and both are highly compostable as a result. They also have their eye on producing bamboo non-woven products for the medical industries. “I say all this with great humility as it was both Sonja [Sheasley] and Susanne [Lucas] in their roles within WBO who took a mere novice, with an idea to try and to change the world, under their wing… helping me develop NooTrees from a worthy idea to a great idea”, says David Ward.

Congratulations to NooTrees!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Alternative fibre tissue brand NooTrees launches in Singapore

2015-10-16_1305

New eco-friendly brand wants to take wood-free tissue products into the mainstream

Singapore, 17th September 2015 – Local green company NooTrees Pte Ltd (“NooTrees®”) is launching a series of sustainable and biodegradable bamboo-based wet wipes and tissue paper products to the mass consumer and commercial market on 1st October 2015. David Ward, Founder of the brand and General Manager of NooTrees Pte Ltd, says, “I wanted to create a brand that would truly be able to make a difference in people’s lives, and we’re hoping NooTrees® is able to find an audience in the Singapore market willing to back the crazy notion that one guy could make a change. We are starting in Singapore as we want to make a positive impact to the people living here and then elsewhere across the region and the world.” Fixing climate change one tree at a time According to a report by World Watch magazine, 27,000 trees are cut down daily to produce enough toilet paper to wrap around Earth’s equator 118 times. Besides the problems brought about by deforestation, wet wipes consumption is also an issue; for example, supposedly “flushable” wet wipes have been clogging up Sydney’s sewerage network, with 500 tonnes in wipe “balls” plunged from the city’s pipes, pumping stations and wastewater treatment and recycling plants every year. NooTrees®’ newly-launched range of bamboo-fibre tissue paper and wet wipes not only present a viable solution to the larger environmental issue, but are also stronger, naturally hypo-allergenic, and more biodegradable than its polyester-based equivalent; its wet wipes are able to degrade in about 45 days in the landfill, compared to years taken by conventional polyester-based wet wipes. The NooTrees® range is competitively-priced with mass market tissue and wet wipe brands, unlike other environmentally-friendly products which tend to cost more than their conventional equivalents. There are no harmful chemicals added to the wet wipes during the overall production process as well. The range includes:

  • NooTrees® Facial Tissue, made from highly absorbent, 100% biodegradable, sustainable and BPA-free virgin bamboo pulp;
  • NooTrees® Toilet Tissue, similar to facial tissues, but made from higher quality BPA-free virgin bamboo Eco-Luxe pulp;
  • NooTrees® Bamboo Hand Face Family Wet Wipes, made from spun-lace bamboo fibre, containing botanical extracts that make the wipes hypo-allergenic and soft on the skin;
  • NooTrees® Cleansing Treatment Wipes with Eco-Dot© Technology, a range of three textured wipes with special biodegradable exfoliating dots:
    • Aqua Skin© moisturising wipes with added hyaluronic acid, Vitamins A & E and Omega 3 & 6;
    • Spa Skin© with added essential oils for relaxation;
    • Age Impact© anti-ageing wipes with added Q10, peptides and antioxidants.

The current challenges for eco-friendly products NooTrees®, wants to position the company amongst regular brands without disrupting consumer choice, to give alternative fibre product a chance to swing environmentally conscious consumers that have yet to step over the threshold due to price. Also, established tissue and wet wipe manufacturers have not been able to go wood-free or plastic-free as quickly as needed, as it would mean a drastic change to their deeply-entrenched business fundamentals. David adds, “There have been a lot of third party studies on alternative fibres in the tissue paper sector, and bamboo consistently comes out as the best long-term alternative and best possible future material to match the growing future demands for toilet and tissue paper as the world population increases.” NooTrees Pte Ltd’s products will be available in all major retailers nationwide, as well as on their online store at http://nootrees.com/ from 1st October 2015.

The Bum Boosa Guide to Celebrating Halloween!

Halloween

#DidYouKnow the average person walks past a murderer 36 times in their life… OK, this isn’t one of those kinds of blogs, we are a family friendly eco business after all! At Bum Boosa we especially love this time of year, I mean who doesn’t like a fright and a spine-chilling horror to lose your sleep over? However, I doubt our little ones would appreciate that so much.

We’ve created a fun-packed guide and this is how we plan on spending our Halloween weekend. We hope we inspire some of you lovely people too.

1) Pumpkin Carving

Pumpkin carving is THE tradition when it comes to Halloween. Spend some creative quality time with your family making jack-o’-lanterns this Halloween.

Here are some pumpkin carving tips:

  • Decide on a design. Here is a great website with lots of designs: http://www.rd.com/slideshows/pumpkin-carving-patterns-ideas/#slideshow=slide2
  • Let kids participate according to their ability. Older kids can help carve (supervise them closely). Younger kids can draw designs for older kids to cut out. Very small kids can help by removing seeds and getting them ready to toast.
  • Thumbtack your paper design onto the pumpkin so it won’t move. Prick an outline of your design with a skewer. Remove the paper.
  • Carve out the design using the right tools. There are special tools just for carving pumpkins, although wood carving tools work well, too.
  • Put your carved pumpkin in a cool, dry place when you’re not displaying it, and limit the time you light it. The more heat it is exposed to, the quicker it will spoil.

2) Make Halloween Treats

Involve your little goblins in whipping up some fun Halloween recipes. Steer clear of refreshments meant to resemble blood and brains, and opt for adorable (and healthy!) treats like these fruity “pumpkins” (oranges with celery segments as the stems) and “ghosts” (bananas with chocolate chips as the eyes and mouth)… they are super tasty too!

hallo

3) Watch Hocus Pocus – Rated PG

Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy play three sisters who are brought back to life 300 years after being convicted of witchcraft at the Salem witch trials. As is usually the case with these matters, their plans to take revenge on society as a whole are thwarted by a band of plucky teens. Since its release, Hocus Pocus has become something of a Halloween tradition, appearing on television throughout the month of October. This is one of our favorites!

4) Mummy Wrap

This game will leave you all wrapped up!

Divide your party-goers into teams of two, and give each a roll of toilet paper.  At the sound of the music, one team member must wrap the other from head to toe (leaving the head free and not binding the arms to the body.) Once completely wrapped, the “mummy” must run to cross the finish line before the others… and where better to get your toilet paper from, than us? Check us out on Amazon here:  http://www.amazon.com/Bum-Boosa-Bamboo-Bathroom-Tissue/dp/B00LLARWG8/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1414784735&sr=8-3&keywords=bum+boosa+tissue

5) Halloween Witch’s Hat Game

This Halloween party game is similar to the game musical chairs… a Bum Boosa mommy fave – you should see our moves.

Beware! You don’t want to be the one caught on the witch’s hat!

Directions:

  • Tape a large picture of a witch’s hat on the floor.
  • Players line up and shut their eyes, whoever peeks is out of the game.
  • The leader will control when the music stops and starts.
  • When the music starts, the players begin walking in a circle around the hat.
  • When the music stops, the person who is standing on the hat is out of the game.
  • The last player to circle the hat wins!

So there you have it, this is how we will be spending our Halloween weekend and we most certainly aren’t worried about the mess… luckily we will have our Bum Boosa Baby Wipes to make cleaning a quick and easy process. We highly recommend you get some of your own too, you can purchase yours here: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=bl_sr_hpc?ie=UTF8&field-brandtextbin=Bum+Boosa+Bamboo+Products&node=3760901

Have a great fun-packed weekend and send us some of yours pictures, we’d love to see how you’re celebrating too!

What is the issue with your tissue?

Is ‘Toilet Paper Dermatitis’ Really A ‘Thing’?

Question from Customer: I have a number of allergies and chemical sensitivities. Here’s the latest reaction: Every time I use a public toilet, I have very uncomfortable swelling.  Some of my friends have told me of a similar reaction.  Is some new chemical being added to the paper to make it dissolve faster or something? This reaction also can make me feel as if I have a urinary-tract infection that lasts only a day or so.BPA TP

A: There are several cases of “toilet paper dermatitis” in the medical literature (Canadian Family Physician, April 2010). Some products may contain residues of bleach or formaldehyde used to process the paper, or BPA’s that are left behind in the recycling processes. These agents may irritate delicate skin in sensitive people.

Once you identify a brand of toilet paper that doesn’t cause a reaction, you may wish to carry some with you to avoid the results of public restroom paper.

WE HELP IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE

_DSC2569_bumboosa_©cesaralsinaBum Boosa Bamboo Products have developed a loyal following of customers who buy our 100% bamboo toilet paper. When we set out to create this product in 2010, we had focused primarily on creating a more eco-friendly tissue and saving trees.  We were not even aware of the prevalence of allergic reactions to conventional tissues.  We were pleasantly surprised that by creating this hypoallergenic product (that is free of formaldehyde additives, chlorine, BPAs, and is the only NON GMO Verified Toilet Tissue on the market as of 10/2014), we are helping people to alleviate discomfort.  When customers email us with their success stories, it is immensely gratifying.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO TRY OUR TISSUE?

We are currently looking for reviewers of Bum Boosa Bamboo Bathroom Tissue and Bum Boosa Bamboo Baby Wipes. Do you, or does someone you know suffer from ‘toilet paper dermatitus’? #SlowYourRoll

Over the last month we’ve spent a lot of time conducting research into the use of bathroom tissue and what we found has completely shocked us! So, in a bid to save trees, we are introducing you to our latest campaign: #SlowYourRoll.

bathroom tissue

Most people tend to use 8 (8.6 to be exact) sheets of toilet paper per bathroom visit and we Americans normally go to the bathroom 6/7 times per day… that’s 57 sheets a day! Although that may be completely normal, the impact it is having on the trees is completely abnormal! Once the maths was done, we found out that annually in America we go through a staggering 314,729,449 trees in bathroom tissue! CRAZY!

#SlowYourRoll: Reduce consumption of bathroom tissue.

A typical North American will use 20,805 sheets of bathroom tissue annually, so surely there must be a way that we can pull together and drastically reduce these huge numbers? Don’t just take our word for it, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the United States could save 470,000 trees, 1.2 million feet of cubic landfill space, and 169 million gallons of water if everyone in the US traded one roll of regular toilet paper for a recycled roll. So here we are, back to #SlowYourRoll, our aim is to reduce the consumption of bathroom tissue on the whole and we’ve come up with a plan to make this a possibility.

Bum Boosa Bathroom Tissue has many benefits: Using rapidly renewable bamboo & also employing a lower impact method to process this raw material fiber, each individually wrapped roll is septic safe, soft, superior 100% tree-free tissue made from bamboo. We go above and beyond recycled content.

Bum Boosa Bathroom Tissue is:

  • 100% bamboo tissue
  • 220 sheets
  • Fragrance-free
  • Fradye-free
  • Elemental chlorine-free
  • Corn-free
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Zero plastic packaging
  • Septic safe, R/V safe (independently tested by a certified lab in the U.S.A.)

We use a lower impact manufacturing method to pulp the bamboo. It is called thermo-mechanical processing and is not the traditionally chemically intensive method used to create toilet tissue.

Our supplier uses 80% less water in the processing than traditional methods not to mention Bum Boosa Bathroom Tissue is Non-GMO certified!

Lastly, unlike most other 1-ply and 2-ply bathroom tissue, Bum Boosa makes a 3-ply bathroom tissue which makes this change possible, allowing you to still Wipe Happy. This means that instead of using 8 sheets of bathroom tissue, you can comfortably use 4! By making this change you can help save an astonishing 21,086,873 trees.

#SlowYourRoll

“Why do the trees need saving” You ask… well, here are some reasons:

1. Trees help purify the air we breathe by absorbing pollutants.

2. Trees improve neighborhood appeal, attracting businesses, shoppers and home-owners.

3. Trees cool our cities and towns by reducing heat generated by buildings and paved surfaces.

4. Tree shade, properly placed, can save an average household up to $250 annually in energy costs.

5. Trees reduce the amount of pollutants in sewer systems, saving communities millions of dollars in water treatment costs.

6. Trees soften harsh building lines and large expanses of pavement, making urban environments much more pleasant.

7. Trees provide habitat for birds and other wildlife, maintaining a balance with nature even in urban areas.

8. Trees reduce the amount of water-borne pollutants that reach streams and rivers.

9. Trees make for safer, more sociable neighborhood environments.

10. Trees are extremely important in the ecology of the earth, they help stabilize the earth’s climate and generate much of the earth’s oxygen!

We need to get everyone involved, so we are asking you to share this story and use the hashtag #SlowYourRoll to spread this message, together we can make a change!

Order your Bum Boosa Bathroom Tissue at www.bumboosa.com to start making a change and remember to always Wipe Happy!

Becoming First-Time Parents

newborn_baby_photos_free_download-1-900x675

Before we start, did you spot our cameo appearance on The Daily Helpline earlier this week? We donated two cases of baby wipes to Steve, Steve is about to become a first time dad and is expecting twins! If you missed Steve’s story and our appearance, don’t worry, you can view it here!

TDH

Following our appearance, we thought we would share with you a check-list of all the things you need to know as a new parent! Brace yourselves.

Here are the only two things any new parent needs to know: a) its fine to make mistakes, your child will be OK, b) buy a tumble dryer… Yes, two very noble tips but let’s carry on!

1) Don’t sweat the small stuff. As long as both you and your little ones are in clean-ish clothes, they are fed, happy and healthy you are doing great as a parent.

2) Make sure that when choosing a new T-shirt (after the birth of your child) that it will be long enough to cover your posterior (whilst bent over) and when covering your nose. This is essential, as the T-shirt-over-nose helps avoid some of the more ripe diaper-pongs and the extra length avoids plumber butt when bending over.

3) Be prepared as new parents to receive a lot of advice! The best advice I can give for those new parents on the receiving end of unwanted advice is to smile sweetly, nod politely and go and do things exactly how you want to. Mom knows best. (Do not ignore the advice of a doctor or other health professionals)!

4) A decent first aid course (not just CPR but more detailed – burns, scalds, bandaging etc) can come in very handy. Kids have accidents, it’s just part of being a parent. The knowledge of how to deal with it helps keep you calm.

5) Befriend your neighbors – just so they are not inclined to call social services when the noise (screams/ tears etc from parent and child) gets a little excessive through the walls.

6) Prioritise time alone with your baby over everything else in the early days, trust your instincts, and remember that most problems can be solved with breast milk (for baby) and chocolate (for mommy).

7) Be careful not to shake your newborn, whether in play or in frustration. Shaking that is vigorous can cause bleeding in the brain and even death. If you need to wake your infant, don’t do it by shaking – instead, tickle your baby’s feet or blow gently on a cheek.

8) Keep your diaper bag packed. Always keep a change of adult clothes in your diaper bag. You don’t want to get stuck walking around with an adorable baby but mustard-colored poop all over you! Other diaper bag essentials, of course: Bum Boosa Baby Wipes and our Bum Boosa Diaper Liners – both these products will make great additions!

_DSC0002_bumboosa_liners_©cesaralsina

9) It’s important to place babies on their backs to sleep to reduce the risk of SIDS. In addition, remove all fluffy bedding, quilts, sheepskins, stuffed animals, and pillows from the crib to ensure that your baby doesn’t get tangled in them or suffocate. Also be sure to alternate the position of your baby’s head from night to night (first right, then left, and so on) to prevent the development of a flat spot on one side of the head.

10) Keep Bum Boosa Baby Wipes handy in every room to mop up nasty spillages and leaks. Bum Boosa Baby Wipes are a unique product that replaces the traditional synthetic or tree-pulp wet wipe using an immensely renewable and sustainable grass: bamboo.

“Why are your baby wipes the best?” You ask. Well… look no further. They are the best because:

  • Thicker, stronger, more absorbent, easier dispensing.
  • Skin soothing plant-based formula with a gentle preservative system
  • Soft bamboo cloth
  • Naturally scented with mild blend of Sweet Orange and Lavender
  • Hypoallergenic
  • No Alcohol, no Sulfates, no Parabens, no Phenoxyethanol

_DSC2732_bumboosa_wipes_©cesaralsina

If nothing else, remember that everyone makes it through, and so will you. Soon enough you’ll be rewarded with your baby’s first smile, and that will help make up for all the initial craziness.

7) Yes ladies, we must protect our secret – our partners can’t know we dye our hair to keep the greys away! Use baby wipes to remove hair dye stains from your forehead.

8) Removing eye make-up. In fact, we know a few make-up artists who use our wipes for this reason.

9) Baby wipes work extremely well cleaning the mud and dirt off of your puppy’s feet. Keep them by the door for those times he comes in muddy from the yard or after a long walk.

10) They are also great for cleaning your dirty shoes, wipe mud and marks straight off with our baby wipes… they’ll leave your shoes sparkly clean!

11) Must-have for your cars glove box: clean a dusty dashboard, your hands after visiting the gas station, the car interior and even bird poop!

12) Hair gone static or frizzing in the humidity? A quick going over with a baby wipe will sort those crazy flyaways out!

13) Baby wipes are astonishingly awesome for stain removal – OK, we can’t guarantee 100% removal but they most certainly help! Have white deodorant marks on dark clothes, our wipes will get them right off! They can also be used to help blot stains on: upholstery, clothes and carpeting!

14) Wipe down house-plant leaves to give them a lovely sheen and get rid of dust.

15) Baby wipes can also be used as tissue for sore noses and bums! Our grandmas also use them when they have Hemorroids and swear by them – but hopefully you won’t need them for that!

So there we have it, the use for baby wipes is never ending! What uses have you discovered for baby wipes? Let us know!
